Hi! My name is Martina and I have a "farm" in my city backyard called FarmTina.
My definition of "farm" is really just a living space that brings together home grown vegetables & fruits, animals, flowers & trees, and concoctions that use all of these ingredients together. I guess you could think of it as a homestead, but FarmTina sounds better than HomesTina, so that's what I'm going with.
I'm starting with a large container garden. Next, I'm adding animals that I can raise for meat, eggs, and honey. I'll use FarmTina ingredients to preserve, cure, infuse, brew, dry, and cook. I'll be throwing lots of Farm Fiestas all summer long so we can interact with the ever-changing space of a living backyard.
I'm not trying to become a professional farmer or raise all of my own food or make a statement about GMOs or locavore culture... I just really like to eat. Like, seriously, I REALLY like to eat.
I have no agricultural experience. I am learning and researching and guessing throughout this entire process. I'm also trying to do this as cheaply as possible, and have so far managed to use mostly found or recycled materials for everything from my watering hose to my vegetable seeds. I'm documenting my discoveries and mistakes and farm evolution here because boys are impressed by girls who write blogs. I also want to be able to share what I'm doing and get some feedback.
